Publication Guidelines

AIEA Books
AIEA occasionally publishes books specifically to address the needs of those leading internationalization at higher education institutions. Learn more about these publications, including The Handbook of International Higher Education, Second Edition and Leading Internalization: A Handbook for International Education Leaders, among others.

Collaboration and Engagement in International Education

**New Series!**
This series focuses on unique strategies and practices to bring about change in international education through:
  • Building faculty-staff collaborative coalitions for social justice-focused internationalization efforts
  • Prioritizing social justice in international education programming, international partnerships, staffing, and hiring
  • Reexamining the incidence of colonialism in the curriculum in international education, disciplinary majors, and general education
  • Other relevant domains in higher education

Issue Briefs
AIEA Issue Briefs inform AIEA members and the larger international education community about key issues in the internationalization of higher education and potential responses.

Occasional Papers
AIEA occasional papers are longer-form essays or reports that inform the AIEA membership and the larger international education community about subjects relevant to the internationalization of higher education.

Research Agenda
This series reflects on existing research, identifies research gaps, and encourages new research to address the gaps. Further, while the series begins with two papers focused on questions pertaining primarily to the U.S. context, perspectives from outside the U.S. are very much needed and welcomed.

Presidential Perspectives
College and university presidents send important signals about the missions and priorities of their institutions.  This series gives voice to the different ways in which higher education presidents define internationalization, align it with institutional mission and student learning outcomes, and understand both opportunities for internationalization and possible threats to it.

Provosts' Perspectives
This series sheds light on the internationalization of higher education from the perspectives of the individuals responsible for the academic functioning of colleges and universities. The series captures Chief Academic Officers' thinking and actions, to learn from their successes, and, as importantly, to learn from the constraints they and their institutions have faced in their internationalization endeavors.

SIO Pathways and Perspectives
**New Series!**
In the past several decades, the international higher education landscape has grown increasingly diverse, both in terms of the types of institutions represented and those who serve in leadership roles. This series seeks to present the full breadth and variety of SIO pathways and perspectives, to add nuance to our understanding of who already serves in SIO roles, and to provide an inspiration and model for others who may be considering such a career path.

Students' Perspectives
**New Series!**
Students are the centerpiece of campus curriculum internationalization and innovation and drive their campus’ academic, intercultural, and research programs. This series captures student expectations, experiences, challenges, and perspectives which could help international education administrators to better understand students’ circumstances and enable the administrators to close any gaps in perceptions around student intercultural experiences on campus.

Five Things an SIO Should Know About...
**New Series!**
While SIOs typically oversee multiple operations, they are generally responsible for the day-to-day management of only a few of them. This series enriches the SIO’s familiarity with key areas and better prepares them to engage with their peers as well as their colleagues within the department or on campus.

They Were at the Beginning: Lessons from Leaders in Internationalization
To help capture the history of internationalization, AIEA and its Editorial Committee created a video series as a chance to learn from those who were there at the beginning of the internationalization. The interviews focus on leaders who in the late 20th century led the internationalization of higher education in the U.S. and abroad.  Many thanks go to Dr. Joan Elias Gore of the Foundation for International Education for initiating and leading the project.

AIEA Reports
Reports put out by AIEA including Annual Reports, and the UNESCO/AIEA Report from Spring 2021.

AIEA is located on the traditional lands of the Catawba and Shakori peoples.  AIEA honors with gratitude the land itself and the people who have stewarded it throughout the generations. This calls us to commit to continuing to learn how to be better stewards of the land we inhabit.
