WHO ARE AIEA MEMBERS?
AIEA members are leaders in international higher education. In the U.S., the term most often used to describe these individuals in higher education institutions is Senior International Officers (SIOs), or those who are leading comprehensive internationalization at their institution. AIEA focuses on the strategic-level issues for administrators leading comprehensive internationalization, and professional development opportunities are targeted for leaders with these multiple responsibilities.
AIEA recognizes that many other terms may be used to reference these leaders, depending on the context and country. In Europe, for example, the International Relations Manager (IRM) is the equivalent to the SIO position; in Canada, a title often used "International Liaison Officer" (ILO). In other parts of the world, this position may be "Vice-Rector, International," "Director of Internationalization," "Senior Internationalization Officer," or "Deputy Vice-Chancellor, International."
I AM NOT AN SIO; CAN I STILL JOIN AIEA?
Yes. Staff at any institution or an organization in international higher education can join AIEA.

Membership funding and category:
WHAT TYPES OF AIEA MEMBERSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE, AND WHAT ARE THE FEES?
AIEA now only has one-member type: AIEA Member. The member fee is $350 annually for the academic year (June 30-July 1).
WHAT IS AIEA FEE FUNDING OPTION?
AIEA understands that some member fees are paid directly by the institution or organization and some member fees are paid by the individual person with their own funds. With this in consideration we require members to select how their membership is funded.
With the new membership model AIEA provides two membership fee funding options; Institutionally Funded Membership or Individually Funded Membership. These options are particularly relevant for:
AIEA members whose institutions only fund an “Institutional Membership”
AIEA members who leave their institution or organization during the membership year
Institutionally Funded membership- fee to be paid by the institution or organization. This is not a member type. Institutionally-funded memberships stay with the institution/organization and do not move with an individual. The membership is transferrable to another individual employed at the institution/organization. *Note: This membership does not cover all staff employed at the institution/organization. Each individual staff member must join in order to be an AIEA member and be eligible for member benefits. Multiple staff members can select the institutionally funding option if the institution/organization is funding their membership. There is no longer any requirement for a designated person that holds the membership in order for other staff members to join.
Individually Funded Membership- fee to be paid by the individual person. This membership stays with the individual and remains active throughout the member term regardless of where the member is employed.
MY MEMBERSHIP IS FUNDED BY AN ORGANIZATION, WHICH FEE FUNDING OPTION SHOULD I SELECT?
If your membership is funded by your organization, you should select the "institutionally funded membership" option. This option covers both institutionally and organizationally funded memberships.
CAN MULTIPLE STAFF MEMBERS USE THE INSTITUTIONALLY FUNDED OPTION?
Yes, multiple staff member are eligible to use this fee funding option. It is not a member type, only an indicator of how the membership is funded. In addition, this funding option would require the membership stay with the institution.
HOW SHOULD I JOIN AIEA IF I AM PAYING FOR MEMBERSHIP MYSELF?
AIEA memberships are often paid for by an organization or institution, and to reflect this, the membership remains with the institution even when an individual member moves before the membership has expired. If your institution or organization does not pay your membership dues, you should select the individually fundedmembership option. With this option your membership transfers with you if you change positions or institutions.
IS THERE SPECIAL PRICING FOR UNDER-RESOURCED INSTITUTIONS?
AIEA will provide partial funding (50% of the member cost) upon request to members in the following situations:
Community colleges, HBCUs, or other MSIs. The member’s current institution must be listed as a community college, historically black college or Minority Serving Institution according to the Carnegie Classification. The Carnegie Classification (of Institutions of Higher Education). is a taxonomy of U.S. colleges and universities. The categories are based on information about the institutions, such as types of degrees conferred, academic disciplines offered, and specialization.*Institutions from outside the U.S. must provide confirmation that their institution is an equivalent institution type in their system.
