AIEA Leadership Academy 
for Newer SIOs & International Education leaders

APRIL 29- MAY 3 2024 | Rizzo Center | Chapel Hill, NC USA

The AIEA Leadership Academy for New Senior International Officers is an intimate, selective, and intensive Academy with deep learning on issues relating to leading internationalization. Participants build a strong network of peers and develop action plans addressing challenges and opportunities in internationalizing their institutions.

EARLY REGISTRATION DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 15TH

Program Acceptance
​​The program will accept a limited number of Senior International Officers (SIOs) at higher education institutions with less than 5 years in their current leadership position. Each participant will be asked to identify a specific challenge or topic of particular interest to them as SIOs, and to write a brief 1-page essay (max 300 words) about this as part of the application process. Applicants will be accepted through the March 1 application deadline. Applicants will be notified of the status of their application within 30 days following the submission of their applications. 

​*Important: Acceptance will only be confirmed for participants who are able to participant in the full Academy training and all scheduled events(dinners, receptions, etc). Participant late arrival and early departure will not be permitted. 

*Applicants are encouraged to apply early, as this is a competitive process with limited space!

Faculty
​​The faculty members for the Academy are all experienced SIOs and will be present for all Academy sessions. The Academy faculty include Dr. David Di Maria (University of Maryland Baltimore County), Dr. Cheryl Matherly (Lehigh University; past AIEA president), and Dr. Amir Reza (Babson College). Additional speakers will include Dr. Darla K. Deardorff (AIEA).

Each faculty member will chair topical sessions, and all will contribute to each topic. There will also be three sessions set aside for presentations and small group discussions among the participants to apply the knowledge to their own institutional contexts. Through the Academy, participants will gain valuable knowledge and insights into how to lead comprehensive internationalization at their institutions. Upon successful completion of the Academy, participants will receive a certificate of completion issued by the Association of International Education Administrators.

Academy Schedule
​Participants are requested to arrive on Monday afternoon in time for an opening reception on Monday evening at the Rizzo Center. The following Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday will feature two working sessions each morning and two sessions each afternoon. Breakfasts and lunches are provided. No group dinners are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. There will be a closing academy dinner on Thursday night at a leading restaurant in Durham/Chapel Hill area. Friday morning will feature a session for presentations by participants and the awarding of certificates of completion, after which participants will be free to depart (no sooner than 12 noon -with flights departing no sooner than 2 pm).

Fees and Payment 
​​The early registration fee for the 2023 Academy is $2950 for members and $3550 for non-members. After November 15, 2023 the fee is $3150 members and $3650 for non-members. This fee covers the cost of lodging (Mon-Thurs nights), text book Leading Internationalization: A Handbook for International Education Leaders (edited by Deardorff and Charles), all academy materials, breakfasts (Tues-Fri), all break snacks and beverages, lunches (Tues.-Thurs.), and the opening and closing dinners. Participants will be responsible for their own travel expenses, airport transfers, two dinners (and Handbook of International Higher Education (second edition), which is an additional recommended text for the Academy). Full payment is due within 14 business days of notification of acceptance.

• Last day to apply at the early member ($2950)/ nonmember ($3550) rate

March 15, 2024

• Last day to submit an application for the 2024 Academy 
• Deadline for cancellation with 25% refund (see cancellation policy)

Other deadlines
• AIEA will notify applicants of the status of their applications within 30 days of the submission of their applications
• Academy fees are due in full within 7 business days of notification of acceptance 

AIEA Academy participants are responsible for securing any visas needed; AIEA can issue an invitation letter upon receipt of full payment

Refunds are possible if notification is given in writing to secretariat@aieaworld.org by the dates specified below:

December 28, 2023
• Deadline for cancellation with 50% refund 

March 15, 2024
• Last day to submit an application for the 2024 Academy (note—this program may fill prior to March 15; you are encouraged to apply ASAP)
• Deadline for cancellation with 25% refund 

*Please also note that AIEA is not responsible for any fees that might be subtracted from the refunded amount to cover bank transfer or service charges. 

No refund is possible after March 1, 2024.

AIEA is not responsible for problems beyond our control such as weather conditions, campus conditions, travel difficulties, visa problems, health issues, etc. No refunds will be given in these situations that may impact participation in the Academy.
