Program Acceptance
|
The program accepted a limited number of Senior International Officers (SIOs) at higher education institutions with less than 5 years in their current leadership position. Each participant was asked to identify a specific challenge or topic of particular interest to them as SIOs, and to write a brief 1-page essay (max 300 words) about this as part of the application process. Applicants were accepted through the March 14 application deadline. Applicants were notified of the status of their application within 30 days following the submission of their applications.
*Important: Acceptance was only confirmed for participants who were able to participant in the full Academy training and all scheduled events(dinners, receptions, etc). Participant late arrival and early departure was not permitted. *Applicants were encouraged to apply early, as this was a competitive process with limited space! |
Faculty

The faculty members for the Academy are all experienced SIOs and will be present for all Academy sessions. The Academy faculty include Dr. Cheryl Matherly (Lehigh University; past AIEA President), Dr. Amir Reza (Babson College; AIEA Past President), and Dr. Paulo Zagalo-Melo (Virginia Commonwealth University; AIEA President).

The Academy covered eleven thematic topics that are relevant for leaders in international higher education:
The Role of the Senior International Officer Strategic Planning International Student Recruitment and Enrollment Management Developing International Strategic Partnerships Budgeting and Exploring Resources Assessment: What SIOs Need to Know Internationalization of the Curriculum Making the Case for Internationalization Career Trajectories for SIOs Future of International Education Each faculty member chaired topical sessions, and all contributed to each topic. There also was three sessions set aside for presentations and small group discussions among the participants to apply the knowledge to their own institutional contexts. Through the Academy, participants gained valuable knowledge and insights into how to lead comprehensive internationalization at their institutions. Upon successful completion of the Academy, participants received a certificate of completion issued by the Association of International Education Administrators. |
Academy Schedule
|
Participants were requested to arrive on Monday afternoon in time for an opening reception on Monday evening at the Rizzo Center. The following Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday featured two working sessions each morning and two sessions each afternoon. Breakfasts and lunches were provided. No group dinners were scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. There was a closing academy dinner on Thursday night at a leading restaurant in Durham/Chapel Hill area. Friday morning featured a session for presentations by participants and the awarding of certificates of completion, after which participants were free to depart (no sooner than 12 noon -with flights departing no sooner than 2 pm).

Fees and Payment
|
The early registration fee for the 2025 Academy is $3100 for members and $3850 for non-members. After November 15, 2024 the fee is $3300 members and $4050 for non-members. This fee covers the cost of lodging (Mon-Thurs nights), text book Leading Internationalization: A Handbook for International Education Leaders (edited by Deardorff and Charles), all academy materials, breakfasts (Tues-Fri), all break snacks and beverages, lunches (Tues.-Thurs.), and the opening and closing dinners. Participants are responsible for their own travel expenses, airport transfers, two dinners (and Handbook of International Higher Education (second edition), which is an additional recommended text for the Academy). Full payment is due within 14 business days of notification of acceptance.
