Amir Reza
Immediate Past President

Amir Reza is Dean of Babson Academy & Global Education, and formerly served as Babson College’s Vice Provost for International & Multicultural Education. He has served on leadership boards for AIEA, IFSA, NAFSA, and several institutions abroad. He has presented at numerous national and international conferences on international education. Reza holds a B.A. and M.Ed. from the University of Maine, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Boston College’s Center for International Higher Education.

Paulo Zagalo-Melo
​President

Paulo Zagalo-Melo in a suit, black and white professional photo
Paulo Zagalo-Melo is Senior Internationalization Strategist at Virginia Commonwealth University. Previously, he served as Associate Provost for Global Education and Senior International Officer  at Western Michigan University. Prior to his role at WMU, Zagalo-Melo held executive positions at the University of Montana, the Luso-American Development Foundation, and Fulbright Portugal. In 2015, he was named an AIEA Presidential Fellow. Zagalo-Melo holds a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University, and a PhD in Political Science from the Catholic University of Portugal.

Jane Gatewood

Jane Gatewood is Vice Provost for Global Engagement at Emory University, her Alma mater. The editor of NAFSA's Guide to International Academic Partnerships, she created and led one of the first international partnerships units at a U.S. higher education institution. She has served in leadership roles for NAFSA and is a member of AIEA's Board of Directors. Gatewood has consulted on education and civil society development in Eastern Europe and has taught at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ 

David Fleshler

David Fleshler served as the inaugural Vice Provost for International Affairs at Case Western Reserve University from 2009 to 2023, where he led the university's internationalization efforts and the Center for International Affairs.  Prior to his time at Case Western Reserve University, Mr. Fleshler held positions in law, government, and nonprofit sectors.  Most recently, he served as Vice Provost and Interim Executive Director of Siegal Lifelong Learning and was named Senior Fellow at the Institute of International Education in September 2024. Mr. Fleshler holds an A.B. from the University of Michigan and a J.D. from Boston College Law School. Fleshler is an AIEA Past President.

Leigh Poole

Leigh Poole serves as the Assistant Provost for Student Success and Executive Director of the International Center at Winthrop University. A frequent presenter at international and national conferences, Poole was elected to serve on the AIEA Board of Directors, selected as an AIEA Presidential Fellow, and has served on various AIEA committees.  She has also held national and regional leadership positions within NAFSA: Association of International Educators.  As a Fulbright Scholar, Poole studied higher education systems in Germany, South Korea, and France.  Currently an Assistant Professor, Poole earned her Ph.D. from the University of Georgia, an M.Ed. from the University of South Carolina, an MBA from Winthrop University, and her BA from Wofford College.​

Clare Overmann
​Chief Executive Officer

Clare Overmann is a longstanding international education leader who joins AIEA following two decades working across sectors and cultures. Most recently, as a senior leader at the Institute of International Education (IIE), Clare led the organization’s global strategic engagement with higher education institutions, governments, corporations, and foundations. Her extensive tenure at IIE included oversight of IIE’s membership associations, Centers of Excellence, major U.S. government-funded programs, and corporate external affairs. An expert on academic partnerships, Clare led the growth and transformation of IIE’s Center for International Partnerships and expanded its flagship International Academic Partnership Program to more than 15 countries. She served as the inaugural Executive Director of the National Academy for International Education and has collaborated with hundreds of colleagues around the world on publications, trainings, and convenings. A graduate of Georgetown University and New York University, Clare serves on boards at NYU and in her hometown in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Committees

Much of the work of AIEA is accomplished through committees that focus on various aspects of AIEA's mission. Any member of the Association is welcome to participate in the work of these committees. Committee chairs maintain a roster of currently active members. AIEA's Executive Director serves as an ex-officio member of all committees and boards within AIEA except the Audit Committee. AIEA members are encouraged to contact the chairs to learn more about committee plans and activities and to indicate their interest in committee participation.
