This series brings together the perspectives that shape campus global engagement, from Provosts’ insights on the successes and struggles of internationalizing at an academic level, to Presidential reflections on defining and aligning internationalization with institutional missions and student learning outcomes, to SIO’s diverse and nuanced experiences along their personal and professional journeys that have brought them to their current positions. Together, these voices illuminate expectations, constraints, opportunities and risks to help international education leaders design more effective, mission-aligned approaches to global learning.
Presidential Perspectives College and university presidents send important signals about the missions and priorities of their institutions. This series gives voice to the different ways in which higher education presidents define internationalization, align it with institutional mission and student learning outcomes, and understand both opportunities for internationalization and possible threats to it.
AIEA welcomes additional submissions to the series, particularly those that will encourage the diversity of the series in terms of institutional type and geographic region. Submissions are reviewed by members of AIEA's Editorial Committee.
Provosts' Perspectives Chief Academic Officers (provosts, deans, vice presidents for academic affairs) play pivotal roles in situating internationalization within the academic agenda of their institutions, a task made more complex but also more necessary by the increasing emphasis on accountability and transparency in higher education. Senior International Officers in turn must seek to understand the competing priorities of Chief Academic Officers, and use this understanding to (re)frame campus internationalization goals so that these complement and extend Chief Academic Officers’ initiatives. The purpose of this series is to shed light on the internationalization of higher education from the perspectives of the individuals responsible for the academic functioning of colleges and universities. The series hopes to capture Chief Academic Officers' thinking and actions, to learn from their successes, and, as importantly, to learn from the constraints they and their institutions have faced in their internationalization endeavors. Ultimately, AIEA hopes that the series will be informative for both Chief Academic Officers engaged in furthering the internationalization of their institutions and the Senior International Officers whose responsibility is to inform and support this work.
The pieces in this series are deliberately kept brief in order to provide key examples and lessons. Most take the shape of an interview (rather than a formal essay) to allow the individual voices and experiences to be heard.
SIO Pathways and Perspectives AIEA seeks to capture the experiences and viewpoints of SIOs and to learn about the personal and professional journeys that have brought them to their current positions. In the past several decades, the international higher education landscape has grown increasingly diverse, both in terms of the types of institutions represented and those who serve in leadership roles. AIEA seeks to present the full breadth and variety of SIO pathways and perspectives, to add nuance to our understanding of who already serves in SIO roles, and to provide an inspiration and model for others who may be considering such a career path.
Submission Process AIEA welcomes contributions for the series, either from SIOs directly or based on an interview of an SIO. The template is available for download (.pdf).
