Navigating Global Inclusive Excellence: Strategies for Senior International Officers in Higher Education
Navigating Global Inclusive Excellence: Strategies for Senior International Officers
January 21, 2-4:30 p.m. EST
Senior International Officers (SIOs) in higher education bear a unique responsibility in shaping the landscape of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) on their campuses and in international education. This interactive workshop invites SIOs to engage in a dynamic exploration of contemporary DEIB issues crucial to their roles. Participants will explore strategies for allocating resources and assessing the impact of DEIB initiatives, ensuring sustainable commitment to these principles. In a time when DEIB efforts may face political risks, SIOs will discuss the importance of resilient leadership and advocacy to maintain these priorities. This workshop empowers SIOs with actionable insights and a peer network dedicated to fostering inclusive, equitable, and globally connected educational environments. Join us in navigating the DEIB landscape and shaping the future of higher and international education. Participants will explore strategies for allocating resources and assessing the impact of DEIB initiatives, ensuring sustainable commitment to these principles. They will also uncover the power of forging partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, unlocking opportunities to advance DEIB priorities effectively. In a world where DEIB efforts may face political risks, SIOs will discuss the importance of resilient leadership and advocacy to maintain these priorities. This workshop empowers SIOs with actionable insights and a peer network dedicated to fostering inclusive, equitable, and globally connected educational environments. Join us in navigating the DEIB landscape and shaping the future of higher and international education.
Participants will:
  • be able to articulate the core principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) in the context of higher education and international education.
  • better understand strategies for how to allocate resources, assess the impact of DEIB initiatives, and align budgeting and assessment practices with DEIB goals in their institutions. They will gain insights into practical strategies and promising practices for implementing DEIB within the international education context.
  • learn tools and experiences to build meaningful partnerships with key internal and external stakeholders to advance DEIB priorities in higher education. Additionally, they will explore, in collaboration with other participants, how to navigate political challenges, sustain DEIB efforts, and champion DEIB principles with resilience and effective leadership.

Innovating for ACTION: Applying Climate justice to Transform International Offices Now!
Innovating for ACTION: Applying Climate justice to Transform International Offices Now!
Virtual
January 23, 2-4:30 p.m. EST

This workshop aims to build a new, yet required, sector competency by demonstrating that international higher education and the climate crisis are inextricably linked and how we can collectively take action. Despite increasing awareness of the climate crisis and the need for adaptation and transformation, the urgency of the situation has not yet led to concrete and transformative action plans, with very few publicized cases of institutions considering reducing their overall emissions impact, and even fewer reducing the carbon emission linked to their internationalization operations and activities.
The time is now to meet student demand for action and face practitioner climate anxiety. From partnership development and recruitment activities to study abroad and work-integrated learning, all manner of internationalization will be explored in this program, with engaging learning activities facilitated by carbon-literate colleagues and shaped by the participants. Expect discomfort, dialogue, problem-solving, and tangible takeaways in this dynamic and timely session!
Participants will:
  • Better understand the connection between international education and climate justice.
  • Be better prepared and practiced to speak about, advocate for, and take action on advancing climate action within their scope of work.
  • Have determined tangible next steps to take equity-centered climate action within their sphere of influence.

Re(Positioning) Global Learning for All at the Center of International Education

AAC&U/ AIEA Workshop:
Re(Positioning) Global Learning for All at the Center of International Education

March 2, 2025; 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Too often global learning is reduced to immersive experiences and transnational mobility rather than an integrative learning process. Recentering our focus on learning processes rather than participation counts is critical if we are to ensure all students have sufficient opportunities to develop the global capacities that are critical to our collective thriving. Such capacities, like collaboration and deliberation across difference are shared priorities held by others on campus. Advancing this work demands coalition building and boundary spanning. This workshop will focus on the institutional structures and relationships necessary to deepen, broaden, and integrate global learning into institutions of higher education. Presenters will anchor the session by providing conceptual grounding for this work and give examples of strategies that leaders can use for a collective agenda that advances global learning for all.
Participants will also have opportunities to apply the framework to their own context and reflect with their peers.
Participants will:
  • Define Global Learning in the context of their institution.
  • Identify structures, relationships, and strategies to
deepen, broaden, and integrate global learning into their institutional context.
  • Devise methods to incorporate a framework that
provides depth, pervasiveness, and integration in their
    global learning initiatives.
