The AIEA Board plays a primary role in guiding the association, particularly as we are currently finalizing a new Strategic Plan and will be onboarding a new CEO in the coming months. We are looking for candidates with vision, experience, commitment, and the ability to work closely with other members of the AIEA leadership team in setting policies and priorities. It is also very important for AIEA leaders to uphold the AIEA values of ethical and innovative leadership, equity and inclusive excellence, curiosity, and respect. As a member-led association, AIEA relies on its Board to broadly represent its diversified membership. We invite nominations from members of all institutional types, national backgrounds, and leadership positions within the field of international education. AIEA members from outside the United States are particularly encouraged to self-nominate or nominate candidates, as AIEA strongly values the perspectives of members from outside the US bring to the work of the association.
Open Leadership Positions:
Specifically, we are seeking nominations for President-Elect, Secretary of the Board, Member Outreach and Awards Committee Chair-Elect, Public Policy Committee Chair-Elect, and one At-Large Board Member (Please see descriptions below for more details).
President-Elect: This individual will be in the leadership stream for three years as AIEA’s president-elect, then president, then immediate past president (with the role of conference chair at that time). It is important that this individual possess leadership qualities to implement AIEA’s Strategic Plan, a vision to grow a diverse international membership association, a proven record of leading internationalization at institutions of higher education, a thorough knowledge of AIEA, and demonstrated past service evidencing a deep commitment to the association. Those interested in serving in this capacity have previously served on the AIEA Committees or Board and have a deep understanding and appreciation of the role of senior international education administrators in the Academy and the work of the Association. The President-Elect serves a three-year term on the presidential stream beginning in March 2025 and serves simultaneously as Conference Chair and Immediate Past President during the last year of this term.
Committee Chairs-Elect: AIEA passed new bylaws in February 2022 that allow for a Chair-Elect year for incoming committee chairs. These individuals will serve one year (2025-2026) as Chair-Elect (without service on the board), then two years (2026-2028) as committee Chair (including service on the board). Board chairs provide leadership for their respective committees which includes organizing regular committee meetings, actively communicating with committee members, submitting committee reports before each board meeting, working with committee members on an annual action plan, and aligning committee activities in the implementation of the current AIEA Strategic Plan. The upcoming chair vacancies are the following: Member Outreach and Awards Committee Chair-Elect, and Public Policy Committee Chair-Elect. Current members of all AIEA active committee are especially encouraged to self-nominate for these Chairs-Elect positions.
At-large Board Member: At-Large Board Members serve three-year terms on the AIEA Board (beginning February 2025) and provide leadership for policy and operational issues for AIEA. Board members commit to attending three Board meetings per year (at their own expense) and providing leadership to AIEA throughout their term which could include serving on board committees and task forces and actively supporting the priorities of the association. Experience serving on other associational boards is helpful, along with either financial/fundraising expertise, JEDI (justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion) knowledge/expertise, and/or marketing/branding expertise.
Secretary: The Secretary serves a three-year term (renewable) on the AIEA Board and serves as the Association's recording officer and custodian of its records, except for those assigned to others, like the Treasurer. The Secretary's primary responsibility is to take minutes of meetings and document all motions made during these meetings. The Secretary also serves as an ex-officio member of the Executive Committee.
The AIEA Board meets three times per year (attendance covered by board members) including prior to the Annual Conference, for a day-long meeting in the fall, and a virtual meeting during the summer. AIEA strives for a Board that is balanced, diverse, and inclusive, and that incorporates a balance of skills, experiences, and perspectives in advancing the association's mission of supporting international education leaders.
If you know someone who is a committed strategic leader in international education, is a current member of AIEA, meets the above qualifications, and wants to help guide AIEA in serving its members, please consider nominating them. If you are such a person, please consider nominating yourself. Your expertise and experience will be very helpful for the sector and for AIEA. The deadline for nominations is October 8.
