​The U.S.’s International Education and Exchange Foundational Programs in a Changing Administration and Congress: What’s in Store?

The federal policy climate impacting the Departments of Education and State’s international education and exchange programs will be examined in the aftermath of the 2024 Presidential and Congressional elections. How will the new leadership present opportunities and/or challenges in their policies and legislation impacting these foundational programs of concern to the higher education community? Potential areas of change and continuity, including policy positions and advocacy strategies will be examined. How can SIOs help impact outcomes?

Presenters:
Miriam A. Kazanjian is an independent consultant and leading international education and government relations specialist in Washington, DC. She has been instrumental in organizing and guiding the Coalition for International Education, focusing on U.S. Department of Education international education programs and policies. She has consulted on international education for numerous national associations, U.S. foundations, U.S. and foreign higher education institutions, and previously represented the New York and California educational systems in Washington, DC.
Mark Overmann is Executive Director of the Alliance for International Exchange, where he was Deputy Director from 2009-2015. He has served as a Senior Manager at Accenture Federal Services; Vice President of External Affairs at InterExchange; and Director of College Communications at Georgetown University. Mark has a BA from the University of Notre Dame and MA from American University. He is co-author of Working World: Careers in International Education, Exchange, and Development (Georgetown University Press).
