Faculty and Participant Biographies

Faculty

Harvey Charles is currently Professor of International Education at the University at Albany, SUNY. He has served as Senior International Officer at a number of institutions around the US, including Georgia Institute of Technology, Northern Arizona University, San Francisco State University and the University at Albany. Charles has been actively engaged in the field of international education and served as President of the Association of International Education Administrators, the leading association worldwide for university leaders of international higher education. Apart from his deep administrative experience, Charles has published on issues including leadership in international higher education, internationalizing the curriculum and comprehensive internationalization. He serves on a number of boards, frequently consults and gives addresses on international education issues in the US and around the world.

Darla K. Deardorff is AIEA Executive Director and affiliated faculty at Duke and numerous institutions worldwide.  Author/editor of seven books and over 50 articles and book chapters, she is regularly invited to speak and consult around the world including the UN and OECD.  Her doctorate is from NC State University.

David L. Di Maria is Associate Vice Provost for International Education at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He is a member of AIEA’s Editorial Committee and a former AIEA Presidential Fellow. Di Maria has also held leadership positions within AIRC, APLU and NAFSA. He regularly, presents, publishes, and consults on key issues pertaining to international education. He earned a doctorate from the University of Minnesota, where his research focused on services for international students.

Until her 2020 retirement, Penelope "Nell" Pynes was the Associate Provost for International Programs at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, leading internationalization efforts, directing the University's Global Engagement Quality Enhancement Plan and promoting student/faculty exchange. She has served as President of AIEA and as Chair of NAFSA's International Education Leadership Knowledge Community and is currently a Senior Associate for Internationalization for the American Council on Education (ACE). She was the 2020 recipient of Diversity Abroad’s Trailblazer Award. A regular presenter on comprehensive internationalization and co-designer of several SIO training programs, she has a doctorate in Germanic linguistics from UNC-Chapel Hill.

Pia Wood is the Vice Provost and Dean of International Affairs at the University of North Texas. Her responsibilities include Study Abroad, International Student and Scholar Programs, Sponsored Students, International Partnerships, Intensive English Language Program, and International Recruitment. She is a past president of the Association for International Education Administrators (AIEA) and American International Recruitment Council (AIRC) and regularly conducts workshops on International Recruitment and Enrollment Management. She earned a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Geneva in Switzerland.

Participants

 C. Arcuino Cathy Lee Arcuino leads UNCP’s Office of Global Engagement in international student and scholar services, international recruitment and admissions, study abroad, the English Language Institute and campus internationalization. She was a Peace Corps volunteer in Kazakhstan, taught English for several years in Japan, Thailand and Poland, and worked for an NGO in Kyrgyzstan. Her master's degree is in education from Framingham State College and her Ph.D. in education and human resource studies is from Colorado State University. Arcuino is an alum of the Fulbright International Educator Administrator Program. She graduated from the NAFSA academy and was a former conference planner, IEM KC liaison and academy coach. Arcuino is currently in the NAFSA Trainer Corps and serves as the leadership cultivation coordinator for KC ISSS.
P.Bailey Phillip Bailey is Associate Vice President for International Engagement at the University of Central Arkansas. Professor of French in the Department of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures, and Cultures at UCA, he served as Department Chair for 16 years before becoming SIO in May 2017. Bailey’s most recent article “The ‘Spark of Human Sympathy’ in Francophone Literature” appeared in The French Review in 2015. Bailey holds a M.A. and Ph.D. in French from the University of Virginia.
 K.Crossley-Frolick Katy Crossley-Frolick is the Director of Off-Campus Study and Associate Professor of Political Science at Denison University. She assumed her role as Director of Off-Campus Study in July 2018. Crossley-Frolick oversees a myriad of global learning opportunities at Denison, including outbound student mobility, faculty-led travel and other initiatives. Her academic research focuses on the big question of how states address gross human rights violations in post-transition situations—away from conflict toward peace and/or away from authoritarianism and toward democracy.
 Anne Dahlman Anne Dahlman serves as the Interim Associate Provost and Dean of Global Education at Minnesota State University, Mankato providing innovative leadership and significant support, across the Division of Academic Affairs and the broader university, in three key areas – administrative leadership, budgets/resources, and global education – to achieve key strategic directions. Dahlman has twenty-five years of experience from seven higher education institutions (two-year, four-year, and doctoral institutions) in four U.S. states and internationally. 
Samba Dieng Samba Dieng is the Senior International Officer and Executive Director of International Programs at Louisiana State University. He is originally from Senegal, and came to the United States to embark on his undergraduate studies in political science at the University of Nebraska - Kearney. Dieng earned his master’s degree in international relations at Indiana State University. His prior professional positions include internships at NGOs serving as an international recruiter for the University of Illinois in Springfield, assistant director of international student services at the University of St Thomas in Minneapolis/St Paul, and director of ISSS at large institutions in Kentucky and Pennsylvania. He also served as a member of NAFSA's Trainer Corps. Most recently, he served as Coach for the NAFSA Academy region VIII. 
 C.Elliott

Cindy Elliott is Assistant Vice President for Global Partnerships at Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS. She focuses on developing and maintaining international partnerships and through these efforts has doubled the number of enrollments for FHSU. Elliott established one of the first dual bachelor’s degree programs in China and has launched other successful study abroad and cross-border partnerships globally. She holds a Master’s in Public Administration from Florida International University and Management of Lifelong Education from Harvard University. Elliott was awarded a Fulbright International Education Administrator grant for France and Germany.
 B. George Babu George holds a Ph.D. degree in Management Studies (2006) and a Doctor of Business Administration degree in international business (2016). He is a graduate of Harvard University’s Institute for Educational Management (IEM-2018 batch). For more than seventeen years, he has been active in the international higher education arena as a professor and as an administrator. Currently, in addition to managing the international programs of Fort Hays State University’s College of Business, George also serves as an Associate Professor of International Business. In the recent past, he served Swiss Management Center University, University of Nevada Las Vegas, Alaska Pacific University, and the University of Southern Mississippi in various academic-administrative roles.
 

Yu Jiang has been Interim Director, Center for Intercultural and International Programs at Xavier University of Louisiana since November 2018. He is also Director of Xavier’s Confucius Institute since 2012. Jiang received his B.A. in archaeology from Beijing University and Ph.D. in art history from the University of Pittsburgh. He was the Paul Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Gallery of Art and Smithsonian Institution 2004-2005. Jiang received the “Distinguished Leadership Award” from Xavier’s President in 2017. As the SIO at Xavier, he has made significant progress in internalization efforts on campus, including streamlining and formalizing procedures, study abroad, curricular expansion, faculty support, cross-cultural activities, and international students and scholars training. Jiang also established the first ever Study Abroad Endowment for Xavier.

 
 D.Maune Dietrich Maune serves as Interim Executive Director in the Center for Global Engagement at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He leads campus-wide efforts to internationalize curricula, services, and programs, and coordinates international activities and initiatives. The Center includes study abroad, international student and scholar support and immigration services, as well as international cooperation and partnerships. He holds a B.F.A and M.F.A in fine arts from East Carolina University. Maune is a professor in the School of Media Arts and Design, and his experience in higher education includes many faculty and leadership positions. Prior to joining CGE, he served as associate dean in the College of Arts and Letters and as director of the Semester in London program at JMU.
 M.Merritt Martha Merritt is Dean and the Carole M. Weinstein Chair of International Education at the University of Richmond and a political scientist who travels with intent. She received her B.A. from Pomona College and her doctorate in Russian politics from Oxford University, launching a career that has included living, teaching, and building programs in nine countries. Before coming to Richmond in 2015, Merritt worked for ten years at the University of Chicago on international programs, fundraising, and undergraduate curriculum. At Richmond, she founded the EnCompass program, which sends students “at risk” of missing study abroad on fully funded, faculty-led short-term programs. Merritt works with faculty, staff and students to facilitate sustained cross-cultural community, emphasizing the kind of long-term engagement that reduces prejudice and opens hearts and minds.
 V. Rowthorn Virginia Rowthorn, is Assistant Vice President for Global Engagement at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) in the Center for Global Engagement (CGE). She also is a senior lecturer at the University of Maryland, Baltimore Graduate School, where she directs the Global Health Innovation Certificate program. Rowthorn is on the Board of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH). In her role as AVP, Rowthorn oversees the activities of CGE, a University-wide center that serves as the hub of interprofessional global health and education activities on the UMB campus. She holds a J.D. and an LL.M. in global health law.
 W. To Wing-kai To is Assistant Provost for Global Engagement and Senior International Officer at Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts. With a doctorate degree from UC Davis, he was a former faculty of History and Asian Studies at Bridgewater State for about two decades. He also served as the Academic Director of Global Programs for three years. To overseas global engagement in the areas of education abroad, international student and scholar services, curricular internationalization, and partnerships development. To has participated in the ACE Internationalization Lab and managed State Department grants such as the Mandela Washington Fellowship. After joining AIEA, he strives to broaden his scholarship and leadership skills in comprehensive internationalization and strategic development at his institution.
 F. Unzueta

Fernando Unzueta is Associate Vice Provost for Global Strategies and International Affairs and Professor of Latin American Literatures and Cultures at The Ohio State University, where he previously served as Director of the Center for Latin American Studies and Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. He holds a degree in industrial engineering from SUNY-Buffalo and a doctorate in Latin American literature from the University of Texas at Austin. Unzueta’s research focuses on 19th-Century Latin America.

 

 
 K.Vogel Katie Vogel is the Assistant Regional Director, ELC & Global Regional Programs at Miami University Regionals. She is active in AIEA, AIRC, and NAFSA and recently completed AIRC's International Student Recruitment and Enrollment Planning (ISREP) program. Vogel presents on issues integrating international students in service and volunteer programs and faculty collaborations. She specializes in developing revenue-generating programs such as intensive English and English for international business. Vogel holds a Master of Arts in education and a Master of Business Administration.
 Y. Wang

Yimin Wang is currently Senior International Officer of Weber State University where she oversees International Students and Scholars Center, Study Abroad, and Learning English for Academic Purposes Department. She also leads the university’s comprehensive internationalization process and global learning initiatives. Previously, Dr. Wang served in leadership roles in international areas at Illinois State University and the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Wang obtained her Ph.D. in International and Comparative Education from Indiana University Bloomington. Prior coming to the U.S., Wang obtained her Master’s Degree from Nanyang Technological University and worked with the National Institute of Education in Singapore.
JY Zhou

Jiangyuan (JY) Zhou is the Director of Global Engagement and SIO at Stockton University. Her work and research focus on internationalization of higher education, faculty engagement, global learning, and assessment. Zhou has published in peer-reviewed journals, presented at numerous conferences, and serves positions in various international education organizations and conferences. She teaches global learning courses and designs curricular and co-curricular programs and activities on global learning. She also consults and leads workshops on curriculum internationalization across disciplines in various higher education institutions. Zhou holds a doctorate in educational theory and practices from Binghamton University.
