March, 2008: The Institute of International Education announced the 2008 Heiskell Awards for Innovation in International Education and recipients included several AIEA member institutions including East Carolina University, The University of Tulsa, Grand Valley State University, and State University of New York at Buffalo. January, 2008: This month's Collegial Conversation features AIEA member Bill Barnhart, Director of the International Center at the University of Utah. Bill Barnhart oversees international student and scholar services, study abroad, international recruitment, and international alumni programming. November, 2007: AIEA's Past President Stephen Dunnett was the invited keynote speaker at the International Conference on Teaching and Learning in Putrajaya, Malaysia. He spoke on the topic of "Issues of Quality Assurance in Off-Shore Programs in Asia."

October, 2007: AIEA Executive Committee member Susan Buck Sutton is the featured international educator on NAFSA's Collegial Conversations. October's Collegial Conversation focuses on "Critical Skills for Senior Campus International Leaders." Susan Buck Sutton gives her thoughts on prioritizing, strategic planning and leadership, and skills identified by the Delphi Study as among the most needed by SIOs. October, 2007: AIEA member John Wood presented a paper at a symposium on international engineering organized by the Beijing University of Technology. His topic was "Partners in Internationalization for More than a Quarter Century: Beijing University of Technology and SUNY Buffalo."

September, 2007: Several AIEA members contributed articles to the Fall/Winter 2007 Journal of Studies in International Education. Contributors included AIEA President William Brustein, Jane Edwards, and Michael Vande Berg. August, 2007: Kenneth Cushner has been appointed President of the International Academy for Intercultural Research; his two-year term running from July 2007 – July 2009. The Academy’s professional journal is IJIR, the International Journal of Intercultural Relations. Those interested in becoming a member can find membership criteria at www.interculturalacademy.org.

June, 2007: Past AIEA President Joann McCarthy published an article in the June 29 issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education entitled, "A Roadmap for Creating the Global Campus."

May, 2007: Former AIEA Executive Committee member Joseph Brockington is the featured international educator in NAFSA's Collegial Conversations Discussion forum. In the forum, Joe shares his thoughts on why international education is long past the time when it was "amateur sports" and anyone could play. April, 2007: AIEA members Madeleine Green of the American Council on Education and Miriam Kazanjian are quoted in the April 27 issue of Chronicle of Higher Education's extensive article on "A Failure to Communicate: Despite pressure from government and industry, universities do not produce enough graduates fluent in 'critical languages'."

April, 2007: Two AIEA members have published articles in the Spring 2007 issue of IIENetworker: Joseph Brockington authored "In-Country Consortia: Rethinking Collaboration in Education Abroad," and Darla K. Deardorff authored "Hallmarks of International Education Assessment." April, 2007: The following AIEA members presented sessions at the 5th Annual Undergraduate Assessment Symposium held at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC on April 13-15: Joseph Brockington, James Citron, Darla K. April, 2007: AIEA member Kenneth Cushner has co-edited a new book with Sharon Brennan entitled Intercultural Student Learning: A Bridge to Global Competence. Kenneth Cushner Ed.D. is executive director of International Affairs and professor in the College and Graduate School of Education, Health, and Human Services at Kent State University. April, 2007: AIEA President William Brustein, along with Riall Nolan and Howard Rollins participated in a very successful NAFSA webinar on “Going Beyond Study Abroad" on April 11, 2007. This was based on their outstanding presentation at the 2006 AIEA conference in San Diego.

February, 2007: AIEA President William Brustein was one of NAFSA's featured international education experts during electronic forum discussions in NAFSA's Knowledge Communities.

January, 2007: Congratulations to the AIEA members elected to national leadership in one of AIEA's sister organizations, NAFSA: Association of International Educators. Those members include Everett Egginton (New Mexico State University) as incoming President, Joy Stevenson (University of Central Missouri) as Vice President for Member Relations, Bob Ericksen (University of California-Los Angelas) to the Board of Directors, Jim Gehlhar (University of Tennessee) as Chair-Elect of the Education Abroad Knowledge Community, Norm Peterson (Montana State University) as the Chair-Elect of the International Education Knowledge Community, and Deborah Pierce (Northern Illinois University) as Chair of the Leadership Development Committee. AIEA members were elected to 6 out of 10 NAFSA positions - congratulations to all of you!

December, 2006: AIEA Past-President Stephen C. Dunnett and member Duleep Deosthale co-authored an article entitled "Tuition fees and international recruitment at public and private institutions of higher education in the United States." This article was published in EAIE's Occasional Paper Series, "The impact of tuition fees o international student recruitment" edited by T. van Vugt ad T. Rogers.

University of California, Davis, CA
Services for International Students and Scholars (SISS) has identified a need for mutual understanding between the UC Davis and Davis community with international students from Arab-speaking countries. The core components of the program will be (1) a regional workshop and  (2) a homestay program for the targeted population of students throughout the entire Davis/Sacramento Area.

Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia
The University System of Georgia (USG) institutions will collaborate to produce a manual on intercultural communication resources to be used for Train the Trainer sessions. The manual will cover general training ideas and techniques and will include specific resources for training on the needs of Arabic-speaking students.

May, 2006: AIEA member Bill Barnhart was awarded the prestigious Homer Higbee award on May 24 at the NAFSA Conference in Montreal.  Congratulations, Bill!

May, 2006: Several institutions received the Paul Simon Internationalization Award at the 2006 NAFSA conference including Purdue University (Riall Nolan).

May, 2006:  The May/June issue of International Educator contains an article co-authored by Darla K. Deardorff and William Hunter on "Educating Global-Ready Graduates"  (p 72-83) in which their intercultural competence models are discussed.  The issue also includes an article by David Austell entitled "Lessons from the Railsplitter:  Observations on Leadership" (p. 84-91).

April, 2006: The spring 2006 issue of the Institute of International Education's IIE Networker has recently been published and it contains featured articles by AIEA President-Elect William Brustein (“Paths to Global Competence: Preparing American College Students to Meet the World”) and AIEA Executive Committee member William B. March, 2006: On March 31, 2006 the Institute of International Education held an all-day session in New York City on the topic "Lead Your Campus to the Top: Best Practices in Internationalizing the Campus."  Several current AIEA members including President Uliana Gabara, President-Elect William Brustein, Howard Rollins, Joseph Brockington, Margery Ganz, Mary Anne Grant, Geoffrey Bannister and Marian St. Onge presented papers at this conference.

March, 2006: AIEA members Darla Deardorff and Bill Hunter presented remarks at a March 30-31 symposium on "Best Practices in Global Citizenship" held at Lehigh University.

Feb 2006, Wash DC: An article in the Chronicle of Higher Education looks at changes in the responsibilities of Stephen Dunnett, vice provost for international education at University of Buffalo, whose job when he joined UB in 1989 was to make sure that international students were adjusting to life in the U.S. and doing well academically, but now also includes developing overseas degree programs for foreign students who cannot -- or will not -- come to the United States to study. The article looks at his work in the context of the growing number of colleges nationally that are opening degree programs overseas, both for academic and business reasons. "We didn't expect so much demand," Dunnett says.
